Slouchy Brioche Socks

This free pattern for Slouchy Brioche Socks is sized to fit most adult women. It uses one 100 gram skein of fingering weight yarn.

Feet wearing orange and blue slouchy socks.

Materials

Yarn: 1 Skein Knitpicks Stroll Yarn -or- 400 yards fingering weight yarn

Needles: US 1 (2.25mm) 9” circular, 2 16” or longer circular or DPN needles


Pattern Notes and Abbreviations

K: Knit

P: Purl

K2tog: Knit 2 stitches together

SSK: Slip 2 stitches knitwise, knit them together

P2tog: Purl 2 stitches together

Sm: Slip marker

bk2tog [brioche knit 2 together]: knit next knit stitch together with its paired yarnover

bp2tog [brioche purl 2 together]: purl next purl stitch together with its paired yarnover

YOS [yarn over slip]: Bring yarn to front of work, slip one purlwise, bring yarn over right needle to back of work



Instructions

Cuff

Cast on 64 stitches using long tail cast on. Join in the round, being careful not to twist stitches.  Place marker for beginning of round.

Round 1: *k1, p1* repeat to end.

Rounds 2-20: Repeat row 1.

Leg

Set up Round: *YOS, p1, repeat from * to end of round.

Round 1: *Bk2tog, YOS, repeat from * to end of round

Round 2: *YOS, bp2tog, repeat from * to end of round.

Repeat rows 1 and 2 until sock measures 8 inches from cuff, ending with row 2.

Last row of leg:  *Bk2tog, p1 repeat from* to end of round.

Heel Flap

Using another circular needle or a DPN, work heel flap over 32 stitches.

Row 1: K3, p26, k3.

Row 2: K3 *Sl 1, k1* to last 3 stitches, k3.

Row 3: repeat row 1.

Row 4: K3 *k1, Sl 1* to last 3 stitches, k3.

Repeat these 4 rows 8 times, for a total of 32 rows.

Heel Turn

Row 1 (with wrong side facing): Sl 1, p16, p2tog, p1, turn

Row 2: sl 1, k3, ssk, k1, turn

Row 3: sl 1, p4, p2tog, p1, turn

Row 4: sl 1, k5, ssk, k1, turn

Row 5: sl 1, p6, p2tog, p1, turn

Row 6: sl 1, k7, ssk, k1, turn

Continue in this manner until all stitches have been knit – there should be 18 heel

stitches left on the needle at this point.

Gusset

Pick up and knit 16 stitches along the heel flap, adding 1 extra stitch between the heel flap and the instep to close the gap.

Place beginning of round marker.

K1, P1 across instep stitches.

Place marker. Pick up and knit 1 extra stitch between instep and heel flap, pick up and knit 16 heel flap stitches.

Knit across heel to beginning of round marker.

Round 1: *k1, p1* to next marker, sm, knit to next marker, SM.

Round 2: *k1, p1* to next marker, sm, k1, ssk, knit to 3 stitches before next marker, k2tog, k1, SM.

Repeat rounds 1 and 2 until there are 32 stitches between each set of markers.

Foot

Repeat round 1 until foot is 7.5 inches from heel (or 2 inches less than total desired length of sock).

Toe

Decrease rounds are knit as follows:

*k1, ssk, k to last 3 sts before marker, k2tog, k1* 2 times

If you are using 9” circular needles, you will need to switch to DPNs or add another circular needle as the stitch count decreases.

Row 1: decrease (60 sts)

Row 2 & 3: knit

Row 4: decrease (56 sts)

Row 5 & 6: knit

Row 7: decrease (52 sts)

Row 8 & 9: knit

Row 10: decrease (48 sts)

Row 11: knit

Row 12: decrease (44 sts)

Row 13: knit

Row 14: decrease (40 sts)

Row 15: knit

Row 16: decrease (36 sts)

Row 17: decrease (32 sts)

Row 18: decrease (28 sts)

Row 19: decrease (24 sts)

Finishing

Cut yarn leaving a 12 inch tail.

Graft live stitches together using Kitchener Stitch.

Weave in ends. 

Repeat for other sock.
