Our Story
In 2008, before the days of smart phones and prevalence of social media, I decided I wanted to teach myself to knit as a way to occupy my time and wind down in the evenings after work. I have always loved to create beautiful things, but as a recent graduate in Art Education, I was burnt out on the drawing and painting I had been doing for years. I wanted something clean and portable, that would lead to something useful, besides another picture.
I have been in love with knitting ever since. It has led me down a rabbit hole of fiber art to crochet, weaving, sewing, spinning, dying and even actually owning my own Angora fiber rabbits.
Working with fiber and yarn, whether it’s dying, spinning or designing patterns brings me great peace. Between caring for children, the household, and working, it can be hard to find time for myself. But even just knitting a few rows always centers me. The rhythmic movement of my hands, watching fiber twist to form yarn, seeing dye spread and colors blend together, turning an idea for a garment from my brain into a wearable object; I love it all!
I created Dark Lake Fiber Art to share my love of all things fiber related with the world. I dye premium yarn that is a joy to work with. All of my yarn and fiber is hand dyed by me in my smoke-free, dog friendly home in Northern Minnesota. I use metal free acid dyes, avoid single use plastics in my making process, and try to be as sustainable as possible. The name Dark Lake Fiber Art was inspired by a lake in Minnesota where our family loves to spend a lot of time. It is my favorite place to enjoy nature, relax, and, of course, knit.
When I am designing knitting patterns, I like to create simple but satisfying patterns. Patterns that you can sneak in a few rows on whenever you get the chance during your busy day, yet are still engaging and create a beautiful finished project. I also teach knitting classes, so others can share in my delight for the craft.
